9.5 * Flammable Liquids Storage Cabinets.
|
|
|
|
9.5.1
The volume of Class I, Class II, and Class IIIA liquids stored in an individual storage cabinet shall not exceed 120 gal (460 L). |
|
|
|
9.5.2
The total aggregate volume of Class I, Class II, and Class IIIA liquids in a group of storage cabinets shall not exceed the maximum allowable quantity of flammable and combustible liquids per control area based on the occupancy where the cabinets are located.
|
|
|
|
9.5.3
Storage cabinets that meet at least one of the following sets of requirements shall be acceptable for storage of liquids:
|
|
|
|
|
1. |
(1)
Storage cabinets designed and constructed to limit the internal temperature at the center of the cabinet and 1 in. (25 mm) from the top of the cabinet to not more than 325°F (163°C), when subjected to a 10-minute fire test that simulates the fire exposure of the standard time–temperature curve specified in ASTM E119, Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, shall be acceptable. All joints and seams shall remain tight and the door shall remain securely closed during the test. |
|
|
|
|
2. |
(2)
Metal storage cabinets constructed in the following manner shall be acceptable: |
|
|
|
|
|
|
1. |
(a)
The bottom, top, door, and sides of the cabinet shall be at least No. 18 gauge sheet steel and shall be double-walled, with 11/ 2 in. (38 mm) air space.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
2. |
(b)
Joints shall be riveted, welded, or made tight by some equally effective means. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
3. |
(c)
The door shall be provided with a three-point latch arrangement, and the door sill shall be raised at least 2 in. (50 mm) above the bottom of the cabinet to retain spilled liquid within the cabinet. |
|
|
|
|

(3)
Wooden cabinets constructed in the following manner shall be acceptable: |
|
|
|
|
|
1. |
(a)
The bottom, sides, and top shall be constructed of exterior grade plywood that is at least 1 in. (25 mm) thick and of a type that will not break down or delaminate under fire conditions. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
2. |
(b)
All joints shall be rabbetted and shall be fastened in two directions with wood screws. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
3. |
(c)
Where more than one door is used, there shall be a rabbetted overlap of not less than 1 in. (25 mm). |
|
|
|
|
|
|
4. |
(d)
Doors shall be equipped with a means of latching, and hinges shall be constructed and mounted in such a manner as to not lose their holding capacity when subjected to fire exposure. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
5. |
(e)
A raised sill or pan capable of containing a 2 in. (50 mm) depth of liquid shall be provided at the bottom of the cabinet to retain spilled liquid within the cabinet. |
|
|
|
|
|
4. |
(4)
Listed storage cabinets that have been constructed and tested in accordance with UL 1275, Standard for Flammable Liquid Storage Cabinets; FM Class Number 6050, Approval Standard for Storage Cabinets (Flammable and Combustible Liquids); or equivalent shall be acceptable. |
|
|
|
|
9.5.4 *
Storage cabinets shall not be required by this code to be ventilated for fire protection purposes. |
|
|
|
|
9.5.4.1
If a storage cabinet is not ventilated, the vent openings shall be sealed with the bungs supplied with the cabinet or with bungs specified by the cabinet manufacturer. |
|
|
|
|
9.5.4.2 *
If a storage cabinet is ventilated for any reason, the vent openings shall be ducted directly to a safe location outdoors or to a treatment device designed to control volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ignitible vapors in such a manner that will not compromise the specified performance of the cabinet and in a manner that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. |

|
|
|
9.5.5 *
Storage cabinets shall include the following marking: |
|
|
FLAMMABLE
KEEP FIRE AWAY |
|
|
|
|
9.5.5.1
The minimum letter height for FLAMMABLE (signal word) shall be 2.0 in. (50 mm) and the minimum letter height for KEEP FIRE AWAY (message) shall be 1.0 in. (25 mm). |
|
|
|
|
9.5.5.2
All letters shall be uppercase and in contrasting color to the background. |
|
|
|
|
9.5.5.3
The marking shall be located on the upper portion of the cabinet’s front door(s) or frame.
Use of other languages, the international symbol for “flammable” (a flame in a triangle), the international symbol for “keep fire away” (a burning match in “no” circle) shall be permitted. |
|
|
|
|

|
11.3 Cylinder and Container Storage Requirements. |
|
|
|
11.3.1
For the purpose of this section, the health care facility’s governing body shall define criteria for determining full cylinders and containers. |
|
|
|
11.3.2
Full cylinders and containers shall be stored in accordance with this section. |
|
|
|
11.3.3
Full cylinders and containers shall be segregated from all others. |
|
|
|
11.3.4 *
Storage for nonflammable gases equal to or greater than 85 m3 (3000 ft3) at STP shall comply with 5.1.3.3.2 and 5.1.3.3.3unless such installations are approved existing installations, which shall be permitted to be continued in service. |
|
|
|
11.3.5 *
Storage for nonflammable gases greater than 8.5 m3 (300 ft3), but less than 85 m3 (3000 ft3), at STP shall comply with the requirements in 11.3.5.1 through 11.3.5.7. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.1
Storage locations shall be outdoors in an enclosure or within an enclosed interior space of noncombustible or limited-combustible construction, with doors (or gates outdoors) that can be secured against unauthorized entry. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.2
Oxidizing gases such as oxygen and nitrous oxide shall not be stored with any flammable gas, liquid, or vapor. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.3
Oxidizing gases such as oxygen and nitrous oxide shall be separated from combustibles or flammable materials by one of the following: |
|
|
|
1. |
(1)
Minimum distance of 6.1 m (20 ft) |
|
|
|
|
2. |
(2)
Minimum distance of 1.5 m (5 ft) if the entire storage location is protected by an automatic sprinkler system designed in accordance with NFPA 13 |
|
|
|
|
3. |
(3)
A gas cabinet constructed per NFPA 30 or NFPA 55, if the entire storage location is protected by an automatic sprinkler system designed in accordance with NFPA 13 |
|
|
|
|
11.3.5.4
Cylinder and container storage locations shall comply with 5.1.3.2.12 with respect to temperature limitations. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.5
Cylinder or container restraints shall comply with 11.6.2.3. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.6
Smoking, open flames, electric heating elements, and other sources of ignition shall be prohibited within storage locations and within 6.1 m (20 ft) of outside storage locations. |
|
|
|
11.3.5.7
Cylinder valve protection caps shall comply with 11.6.2.2(4). |
|
|
|
11.3.6
Storage for nonflammable gases with a total volume equal to or less than 8.5 m3 (300 ft3) shall comply with the requirements in 11.3.6.1 and 11.3.6.2. |
|
|
|
11.3.6.1
Individual cylinder storage associated with a smoke compartment in accordance with NFPA 101 shall not be required to be stored in enclosures. |
|
|
|
11.3.6.2
Precautions in handling cylinders specified in 11.3.6.1 shall be in accordance with 11.6.2. |
|
|
|
11.3.7
When small-size (A, B, D, or E) cylinders are in use, they shall be attached to a cylinder stand or to medical equipment designed to receive and hold compressed gas cylinders. |
|
|
|
11.3.8
Individual small-size (A, B, D, or E) cylinders available for immediate use in patient care spaces shall not be considered to be in storage. |
|
|
|
11.3.9
Cylinders shall not be chained to portable or movable apparatus such as beds and oxygen tents. |
|
|
|
11.3.10 Signs.
11.3.10.1
Storage locations meeting the requirements of 11.3.4 or 11.3.5 shall have precautionary signage, readable from a distance of 1.5 m (5 ft), displayed on each door or gate of the storage room or enclosure |
|
|
|
11.3.10.2
Sign(s) shall include the following wording as a minimum: |
|
CAUTION
OXIDIZING GAS(ES) STORED WITHIN
NO SMOKING |

|
18.3.2.4 Medical Gas.
Areas where medical gas is stored or administered, and the operation, testing, and maintenance of medical gases shall be in accordance with NFPA 99.
|
|
